Exit Intent Popup PRO
Catch visitors who are about to leave by showing a customisable popup the moment their cursor moves toward the close tab. A second chance to convert someone who would otherwise be gone.
How exit intent works
"Exit intent" is detected by tracking the cursor position. When the visitor's mouse moves rapidly upward toward the top of the browser (toward the close button or address bar), the popup fires. It's a strong signal they're about to leave.
💡
Exit intent only fires once per session. If the visitor closes the popup, they won't see it again until they open the page in a new browser session.
What the popup contains
The exit popup is fully customisable. You can:
- Set a headline and body text
- Customise the button text and where it links to
- Match the styling to your page's branding
- Add a countdown timer (fixed or evergreen) to create urgency PRO
- Add an image PRO
Common use cases:
- Bridge pages: "Wait! Watch this 2-minute video before you go" — links to your offer page
- Squeeze pages: "Don't miss out — get the free guide" — second chance to opt in
- General: "Special offer just for you" — discount or bonus
Setting up an exit popup
- Open the page in the editor
- Open the Exit Popup settings panel
- Toggle Enable exit popup on
- Customise the headline, body, button text, and link
- (Optional) Upload an image to display in the popup
- Save and click Update
Mobile behaviour
True exit intent doesn't really exist on mobile (no cursor to track). On mobile devices, the popup uses alternate triggers:
- When the visitor scrolls back up rapidly
- After a configurable amount of time on the page
This gives you mobile coverage even though the desktop "mouse-leaving" signal isn't available.
Tips for high-converting exit popups
- Match the offer to the page. A vague "Wait! Don't go!" rarely works. Tie the popup to the specific reason they came.
- Keep it short. They were already leaving — don't bury the new offer in paragraphs of text.
- Make the close button obvious. A frustrated visitor who can't find the X will leave anyway and remember the bad experience.
- Test it. Use A/B testing to see if your exit popup is actually moving the needle, or if visitors are just closing it.
Troubleshooting
The popup isn't appearing on desktop
- Make sure the toggle is on and the page has been updated
- Open the page in incognito (the popup is once-per-session — if you've seen it already in that browser, it won't reappear)
- Move your mouse rapidly up to the top of the screen — slow movement won't trigger it
Visitors are reporting it's annoying
If you're getting feedback that the popup is intrusive, consider:
- Softening the copy
- Making the close button more obvious
- Turning it off entirely if your audience is sensitive to popups (e.g. B2B / enterprise)
